Why New Yorkers Will Soon Be Required to Have This to Travel
Planning a trip soon? You're going to need to make sure you have one of these with you if you are getting on a plane in New York, or anywhere in the US, for that matter.
When you don't travel often, it can be intimidating to remember all the rules. What am I allowed to bring in my carry-on bag now? Can I have liquid with me? How much can I bring? Will I get in trouble if I have this with me?
Normally, if you have something you're not supposed to have (as long as it's not illegal), they'll just have you leave it at the security checkpoint. But if you don't have the correct identification, you won't be able to get on the plane, even if you bought a ticket.
Starting on May 7th of this year, the Federal government will require you to have one of three different types of identification to travel on a plane. You'll need either a Real ID, an Enhanced License or non-driver ID, or a passport. Any of those things will work, but they're the only pieces of identification that they'll accept. You can't use your student ID or a social security card. It will have to be one of those three types.
How can I tell if I have a Real ID?
To check if you have a Real ID that was issued by the government, check for a black star or a United States flag. You can see what those two symbols look like in the table below. If your card lacks either of those markings, it is not REAL ID-compliant and will not be accepted as valid identification for boarding commercial aircraft.
How do I know if I have an Enhanced License in New York?
While a Real ID doesn't cost any extra, an Enhanced License will cost an extra $30. But it does come with some extra perks. It will allow you to enter Mexico, Canada, and parts of the Caribbean (without needing a passport). It will say "Enhanced" at the top, under the words New York State and "Drivers License" or "Learner Permit."
If you have a trip coming soon, you'll have to fill out the paperwork at the DMV or begin the process online.
