Overreaction: “These Buffalo Bills Will Never Win a Super Bowl”
This is an overreaction. Let's be clear. Just because I or anybody thinks these things doesn't mean that that's what it really is, or that it's an appropriate response. So don't punish me for my honesty. Though knowing the state of the world, you probably will anyway, and that's fine. But it's an overreaction to a problem. It is not the proper response. It is not the truth. In fact, it means nothing in the end. I just wanted to share how I felt after the Bills lost to the New England Patriots last night because I'm sure many of you have the same problem.
My overreaction to the Bills losing to the New England Patriots 23-20 in their home stadium last night was this: This team will never win a Super Bowl.
Again, I told you it's an overreaction, and a pretty dumb one. But why did I think that? It's because time and time again, they beat themselves in the dumbest ways. They hadn't fumbled in forever. Of course, they fumbled twice. Josh hasn't been throwing interceptions. Of course, he throws an interception. The Bills had 11 penalties that were accepted. On paper, if you look at the box score, the Bills led in time of possession, had fewer punts, had fewer sacks allowed, had more total plays, were better on third down, had more first downs, had more total yards... and yet you lose to a Patriots team that's not bad, but is not better than the Buffalo Bills.
To make matters worse, you lose at home in the final season of the original Highark Stadium in front of a sold-out crowd on Sunday Night Football, on a national stage, wearing the new uniforms. By the way, can we all agree to burning those? That's an overreaction, too.
When the Bills lose, they do it to themselves almost every single time. And it's just absolutely infuriating as a fan to watch. They play down to their opponent. They did it last week against New Orleans. Are they going to do it this week to Atlanta? This team should be winning by 20 and 30 points every week, almost regardless of who they play. Which is why I thought to myself, self, this team will never win a Super Bowl because they seem hellbent on playing down to their opponent and not playing their game. It feels like they lack a killer instinct sometimes, which is also an unfair statement because look at all the games they've dominated and won over the past stretch. But that loss really made me think, geez, I don't think they have what it takes.
And to be clear, this is all an overreaction because the reality is it doesn't matter if you're home or away. It doesn't matter who the opponent is. Truly, any given Sunday, you can have a bad game and lose. There's a lot of randomness in sports. It doesn't mean that the team that beat you was better than you. It just means that things didn't fall your way. We see it all the time in hockey, but the nice part about hockey is that there are 82 regular-season games and best-of-seven playoff series. Playoffs, by the way, are when you keep playing after the season, just in case you didn't know, being a Sabres fan. Sorry, low-hanging fruit there.
A bad game is not the end of the world for any team. But in the NFL, one bad game can really screw things up for you. That's what makes it so infuriating. Are the Bills still a Super Bowl favorite? 100%. Are the Patriots better than the Bills? Factually, no. Does losing this game mean the Bills won't win the Super Bowl? Of course it does not. It's just an overreaction. Something every sports fan is good at having. But I thought I'd share mine with you.

In case you want to relive the loss (yuck), here are some pictures from last night. It's a shame, too. Those jerseys looked sweet, but left a bad taste in my mouth after this one.
