A tragic accident that has completely reshaped a family's life is causing more people to talk about whether or not pit bull should be pets.

Just last week, two toddlers were mauled to death by a family‘s pet pit bulls. The pit bulls have been in the family for eight years, according to People, and all of a sudden they just snapped.

It was unlike the dogs to attack like this, but they did. And it only takes one.

The mother, Kirstie Jane Bennard, was hospitalized with multiple injuries after attempting to pull the dogs off her 5-month old son and her 2-year old daughter.

After the 10 minute long dog attack, according to People, the two children died at the scene.

The two dogs were later euthanized, and it’s unclear what exactly set off the attack.

There have been people on both sides of the situation, suggesting that the kids must have done something to trigger the pit bulls to attack, but then there are other people suggesting that pit bulls should be banned from families who have young children.

It’s no secret that pit bulls have a history being known as an aggressive dog, and while that is not entirely true, maybe this horrific tragedy has opened up our eyes that pit bulls should not be pets for families with young children.

A few people went on social media to share their thoughts.

"I don't care what anyone says or thinks that pit bulls are ok for pets. This happens over and over and yet people think they make great pets!"

"These 2 dogs were not recently adopted! They were in the home for 8 YEARS! Their personalities and behaviors were well known to the owners. The thing that changed was adding young children into the family and assuming the equilibrium would remain."

There’s no word yet as to whether or not pit bulls will be banned for specific family situations in New York state, but conversations are definitely happening among our community as we mourn from afar the loss of two beautiful children and a family who now has to adapt to this “new normal.”
