The damage is still being assessed in portions of Western New York and Buffalo after one of the strongest wind storms in years passed through the area over the weekend. The winds were strong enough to churn Lake Erie and force waves up over the roads and deluge buildings on Route 5 in Hamburg.

The weather changed dramatically as some in the area had over 6 inches of snow on the ground just days prior to this wind event moving in. Rain and winds began late Friday and by Saturday, there were gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour.

Check out this video we found on YouTube that perfectly shows the power and violence that the water along the shores of Lake Erie had at the height of the storm.

As of early Monday morning there were still residents without power and multiple crews that were in Buffalo and the suburbs working to clean up the mess that was left behind. I noticed utility trucks from other states were staging in the downtown area, ready to move in to place to assist the towns and villages with the cleanup.

The winds have calmed down and the forecast calls for a mild pattern to take over the area for at least a few days. Will we see a white Christmas? There may be a chance. When you consider that Lake Erie is still pretty warm, lake effect snow is always a possibility and things can change in a short time. Until then, be aware of downed trees and debris for the drive around town.
