Congratulations to the West Seneca West High School football team.  They returned to Western New York from Syracuse over the weekend as state Class A champions after a 14-6 win over Section I Yorktown.

Quite a turnaround for a program that hadn't been to the playoffs in 12 years.  They went undefeated in the regular season and won every playoff game to finish 13-0.

Yorktown scored on its first possession, but the West defense shut them out the rest of the way.  Quarterback Matt Myers led the offense completing 22 of 38 passes for 202 yards and rushing 15 times for 82 yards and a touchdown.

West Seneca West was the only one of three Section VI teams that played title games in Syracuse over the weekend to come away winners.  Maple Grove fell to Section II Cambridge in the Class D championship 26-14.  And Lancaster's dream of a perfect season fell one game short in the Class AA title game.  The Legends fell to defending champion Troy of Section II 41-26.  It ended Lancaster's 12-game winning streak while extending Troy's winning streak to 26 straight games.

Meanwhile, Canisius fell in the Catholic High School state championship game to Stepinac 49-28.  That game was played at the Canisius home field in West Seneca on Saturday.
