What Temperature do you set your thermostat at in the winter here in Western New York?  Be careful how you answer this question, as it seems to be a topic of great debate around these parts.  Some people try to hold out as long as possible before even turning on the heat for the season, and others will fire up the furnace the first time the temps outside dip below 50.  But in the end, the temp that you set your thermostat at can say a great deal about you.

In my house, there is a constant debate between my wife and I, as to where we should keep the heat.  We both seem fairly ok with keeping it set to 68 degrees during the day.  But at night, it's a different story.  Personally, I would like to have it dip down to a nice and crisp 62 degrees.  I feel that I sleep best when the room has just a bit of chill to it, whereas she likes to pile under 5 blankets and be uber toasty.

According to the Department of Energy,

"You can easily save energy in the winter by setting the thermostat to 68°F while you're awake and setting it lower while you're asleep or away from home."

So it seems I am on course with the daytime temp, as well as my lower prefered nighttime sleeping temp.

The website fuelingtomorrowtoday.com says;

"Set thermostats between 65° and 70° during the winter, and at 58° when away from the house for more than a few hours. By turning your thermostat back 10°-15° for eight straight hours, you can save about 5%-15% a year on your heating bill — a savings of as much as 1% for each degree."

Again, a check for me in the daytime temp column, but setting the heat to 58 degrees at night would be the sign of a true psychopath.

So here in Western New York, there must be a happy medium.  But in my ever so humble opinion the best winter settings for your thermostat are;

- 68 degrees in the day

- 62 degrees at night

One thing we all can agree on here in WNY, this...this is just wrong!
