Here is something to smile about this year - your 4th of July party will be more affordable this year! American Farm Bureau Federation, the holiday will cost slightly less than it cost you last year! The average cost of a summer cookout for 10 people this year is $55.07, or $5.51 per person, which is down around 1% from 2017.

Here's the menu for 10 for $55.07:

  • 8 Hot Dogs (1 lb) and Buns
  • 8 1/4 lb hamburgers with Buns and Cheese
  • Pork Spare Ribs (4 lbs)
  • Ketchup and Mustard
  • Deli Potato Salad (3 lbs)
  • Baked Beans (28 oz)
  • Corn Chips (15 oz)
  • Lemonade (2 quarts)
  • Chocolate Milk (2 quarts)
  • Watermelon (4lbs)

While these costs are great for you, according to the AFBF Director of Market Intelligence Dr. John Newton,

“This is a very tough time for farmers and ranchers due to low prices across the board. It is appropriate that this very painful situation hitting farmers be reflected at the retail level as well.We are seeing record meat and dairy production in 2018 so that has also influenced retail prices and so, for consumers, this year’s Fourth of July cookout costs will be slightly less than last year’s."

So while prices are great for you it does mean some bad news for those that are producing our food. You can read the full report from AFBF HERE.
