The domestic terrorist attack at the Tops Markets in Buffalo's Kingsley neighborhood had an incredible impact on Buffalo.
It's been just about two months since a domestic terrorist came into our community and took 10 lives in a mass shooting that rocked our entire region. Since Saturday, May 14, 2022, the community has been trying to put the pieces back together.
While Buffalo has a long way to go, it is on its way to getting back to something that looks normal. The Tops Markets on Jefferson is set to reopen soon. Many services that have left the area are making their return, and many people are getting back to a normal sort of routine.
More than 100 young adults gathered just a few blocks away from the shooting site to help promote healing, wellness, and coping skills through artistic expression on Tuesday, July 12, 2022. The Buffalo Urban League, the Burchfield Penney Art Center, and the Buffalo Public Schools all partnered together to host Arts for Healing on Jefferson Avenue.
Officials from the 3 organizations closed down a full block of Glenwood Ave, just off Jefferson Ave, to host a full-fledged arts seminar where the students took instruction from various locally-known artists who led them on ways to express themselves with art. From sketches and canvas painting to chalk on the sidewalk, dozens of students engaged in these fun activities for hours.
After they were done creating art, all of the students and sponsors sat down for lunch and encouragement.
You can check out some of the pictures from the event, along with some images of the art the youth created below.
