Cold weather and high winds will create dangerous conditions across New York State today.

A string of winter storms is affecting the overwhelming majority of New York today. In Western New York, Buffalo had several inches of lake effect snow off of Lake Erie for the majority of the weekend. Now, the Finger Lakes, Central New York, North Country, and the Mohawk Valley will all face heavy lake-effect snow with blizzard-like conditions today. All areas will have cold temperatures with single-digit windchill.

Even more concerning is the wind. Many areas will face winds of 65 MPH. That's close to hurricane-force winds. Hurricane winds begin at 74 MPH, which is possible for areas of the Empire State to reach today. The high winds make for blizzard conditions. it can cause whiteouts with zero visibility, massive snow drifts, and deadly windchill. Driving in these conditions is treacherous since visibility will be so low. There are also several road salt shortages statewide, creating very slippery roads.

In fact, the salt shortage is nationwide. The issue is not only for towns and plows but even for residents. Stores throughout the state are sold out or have very limited amounts available for purchase.

When conditions are like this, it is best to stay inside and avoid traveling if you can. Make sure you check on people who may be vulnerable. While it's important to try and keep your sidewalks shovels, be cautious as doing physical labor in these conditions can lead to heart attacks.

Be safe out there.
