Ever since Memorial Day Weekend, some drives in Buffalo and Western New York have seen ATV's and dirt bikes riding illegally on the streets. It's been a problem for police this summer but now a concentrated effort is being made to stop it.

According to WKBW, Buffalo Police and the Erie County Sheriff's Office set up a detail on Sunday to stop the riders.

“The only way to stop these gatherings is before they occur,” said Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo.

Not only were there officers on ground level, but the Sheriff's office had a helicopter in the air during the detail to catch illegal riders of ATV's and dirt bikes.

“Throughout the course of the day, we were able to impound seven of them. Some were involved in accidents,” Rinaldo said.

Some motor sports stores were robbed of ATV's this summer and Buffalo Police say they check the VIN number on all the vehicles they stop to make sure they're not stolen property.

We'll see if other details are set up before the cooler weather sets in.
