Millions More Allocated To Repair USS The Sullivans In Buffalo
Ever since the USS The Sullivans started taking on water earlier this year and starter listing at its dock on Lake Erie, there has been a concerted effort all across Western New York to help right the ship and get the ship back in good working order.
Those efforts have included various campaigns, lots of funds raised by veterans and lovers of the ship, and even a 4-year-old donated all the money in his piggy bank to help repair efforts.
Now thanks to an infusion of Federal funds that have been spearheaded by Congressman Higgins and Senator Schumer, even more money is on the way to Buffalo for repairs.

Congress has appropriated $7.5 million to Western New York to fully restore the USS The Sullivans.
In April I put out an SOS to the feds – Save Our Sullivans- and promised it would be all hands on deck until we got the funding needed to restore this pride and joy of Buffalo. Now I am proud to announce that hope is on the horizon to fully restore the USS The Sullivans and ensure she remains at Canalside as a beacon on Buffalo’s beautiful waterfront... This funding is the lifeboat this historic vessel needs to complete its repairs, and I will keep fighting to guide us through these rocky waters and steer this ship through the repair and restoration process to keep her safe and seaworthy for generations to come.
-Chuck Schumer, US Senator for New York State
$2.5 million is coming from the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund and the remaining $5 million will come from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Fund.
The USS The Sullivans has been a memorial museum ship in Buffalo harbor since 1977.
