New York’s Eviction Moratorium Ends Leaving Thousands in Jeopardy

Back in September 2021, New York State extended the eviction ban until the middle of January 2022. That eviction ban just expired on January 15, 2022, and now thousands of people across the state are scrambling to figure out what to do.

Unless there is some immediate action taken by Governor Kathy Hochul, or by the New York State Legislature, housing courts throughout New York State are poised to allow evictions and foreclosures to resume any day.

This past summer housing advocates across the state estimated that there are a few hundred-thousand of New Yorkers who are still behind on their rent and will likely lose their housing due to those large past-due balances. This also applies to many homeowners across the state with delinquent mortgage balances.

There are still quite a few housing assistance programs that may be able to help people who are behind on their rent and/or mortgage. We have a few listed below:

• The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance still has millions of dollars under the Emergency Rental Assistance Program for eligible individuals and families in New York. Officials have also launched a Landlords Rental Assistance Program for landlords who have tenants who will not apply for help on their own.
• The City of Buffalo has also re-released an assistance program to help renters and homeowners who are struggling with their rent and mortgages.
• The New York State Attorney General and New York State Homes and Community Renewal have a Homeownership Assistance Fund that has more than $500 million available to help homeowners who are behind on their mortgage payments.

While it looks like evictions and foreclosures will begin again there is a lot of help available, but time is of the essence so please act fast
