It's officially winter in Western New York and many in Western New York got the full experience today with the lake effect snow band that is still impacting the region.

Snow and ice are common right now, as smaller lakes and ponds are frozen. That's the case for a lake in Niagara County and it was the sight of a miraculous rescue from one brave Western New York officer.

Officer Smith in Lewiston stepped into action when he saw a dog that had wandered out onto Bond Lake and fell through the ice.

The dog was about 50 yards off shore, but the officer didn't hesitate. Officer Smith also received a recent award for pulling a woman from a burning building.

You can watch the video below.

The owners of the dog sent the Lewiston Police Department a lengthy thank you for saving their dog's life, who was a 10-month-old lab named Kona.

Kona was in the ice 10-15 minutes and was getting tired swimming in the cold water.

Walking across that ice was extremely dangerous but it's amazing that this officer didn't even think about not doing so, he was going to rescue this dog. It didn't look like that dog was getting out of the water himself, and the ice-cold temperatures probably made it that less likely.

I'm so glad that this dog was able to make it out safely, and good on Officer Smith for saving his life. It's such a heartwarming story.
