My 14-year-old sister called me the other day. She was so excited. Turns out, she got her learner’s permit. Yes, that’s right. She’s 14. And she has a permit. Now granted, she lives in Florida, but still, she’s 14! Isn’t that a little early to be given the right to drive? I don’t care if an adult accompanies her. I remember the stupid stuff I did when I drove at 16, let alone 14.

If that isn’t disturbing enough, I come to find out she didn't even have to step foot in the DMV. Nope, she did it all online. Is this really where we’re heading? Don’t you think it’s a little risky to let any Joe Schmo take a test online, leaving him to either search the Internet for correct answers or have a friend/parent help?

This news came on the heels of New York State announcing that drivers no longer have to take an eye exam to pass their tests. Really? Didn’t we just have a few accidents where people drove into buildings? Wasn't one of those accidents devastating, taking the lives of innocent people? Now, I’m not saying that eyes were the cause of these accidents, but that’s where I would start.

Bottom line is that I’m giving up my license. The streets aren’t safe. Then again, neither are the sidewalks.
