Does anyone remember this during the pandemic? If you missed the story, the houses have since been sold.

One man in Lancaster has just about had enough. Actually, he has had enough. The man was owed so much money he spray-painted names on his roof. Time to pay up for the service that is provided to you. At what point is this actually stealing?

He owns rental properties in Lancaster and his tenants have not been paying. He made a video that you can see below explaining the whole thing. Apparently, 2 of them owe $11,000 and another owes $10,822.16.

In order to combat all of his tenants, he decided to publicly shame them and spray paint his roof with their names and the amount they owe. Another tenant he shamed by spray painting some plywood on the side of the home in Lancaster off of Central Ave.

Ironically, in the middle of all this, the heat broke. Of course, they called him....you can see his response in the video below.

Is this right or completely wrong that the landlord did this? I am just going to give you the facts here and you can form your own opinion. Since the pandemic started:

  • There were laws passed that banned landlords from evicting tenants.
  • Rental assistance programs were offered.
  • Unemployment given out hit a record high.
  • Many banks offered programs to homeowners and landlords to push off their payments. (They would still owe their mortgage, but if they needed help, they could pay later).
  • There were 3 stimulus payments given out by the United States government.
  • As of the March job report job openings have risen to 8.1 million in the United States.

Unfortunately, those that are sitting in their home without paying. The law states that, technically, your time is up. As of May 1, 2021, you are no longer under the protection of the law. According to the New York State laws during the pandemic on the New York State website:

The legislation allows residential tenants unable to pay their rent or secure alternative housing and suffering a financial hardship to file a hardship declaration at any time with the landlord or court. This declaration will automatically lead to a stay of the continuance of any proceedings and execution of any warrants of eviction until at least May 1, 2021.

Check out a video that the landlord posted last week. One of the commenters on the YouTube video posted below was from a user named Ang:

I'm so sorry I'm a renter just around the corner from you and that is despicable disgusting behavior on their part. I'm so sorry they had to drive you into vandalizing your own property just to get a message across it's absolutely disgusting and shameful.
