There is a scary reminder to anyone who owns a home in Western New York after a recent incident in Amherst.

According to police in Amherst, person try to break in to a woman’s home over the weekend on Daisy Lane. Before the police could show up at the house, the person ran off but was eventually taken into custody.

It is a reminder that even while at home you should check your locks to make sure that they are properly locked and perhaps a deadbolt or chain added to your doors.  Home invasions are a real thing and some thing that you can try to help protect yourself from.

We have young children and I am always making sure our doors are locked to keep them inside! One of my fears is that our young kids with somehow open a door that’s not locked and get outside without us knowing.

But the recent incident in Amherst is a good opportunity for all of us to make sure that we have proper locks and perhaps have a new alarm system installed if that is something that you can afford.  Adding better lighting to the perimeter of your home and perhaps even some cameras that are motion activated can also help keep burglars at bay.

Police in Amherst are also asking if you have any items missing from your personal property to contact them as the suspect taken into custody may have been a part of other break-ins or thefts in the area recently.

As the school year begins, safety and security should be top of mind both at home and while the kids are traveling to and from school. Let’s all have a great and safe fall in Western New York!
