Buffalo Bills v Baltimore Ravens

Nathan Peterman earned the right to start at quarterback for the Buffalo Bills in the season opener based on his play in the preseason. He was clearly the best quarterback in training camp, but it took just over two quarters of play against the Baltimore Ravens to earn himself a spot on the bench as the Bills were embarrassed by the Ravens 47-3, the Bills second-worst defeat in franchise history.

Peterman completed only 5 of 18 passes for 24 yards and was intercepted twice before he was replaced by Josh Allen early in the third quarter.  Allen didn't have a whole lot more success either and much of that had to do with an offensive line that just couldn't provide protection for the quarterback or provide any openings for the Bills rushing attack.  And it would help if the Bills receivers would catch passes that end up bouncing off their hands or their jerseys.

The Bills managed only 153 yards in offense for the game and gave up six sacks.  And one of the most galling stats for the Bills is that they failed to gain a single first down in the first half.  They ended up with 10 for the game.

This was a complete team meltdown as the defense couldn't provide a stop as the Ravens scored 26 points in the first half and gave up 369 yards and 26 first downs for the game.  Joe Flacco completed 25 passes for 236 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Bills defense.

Even the Bills special teams contributed to this one as Stephen Hauschka missed a field goal try and punter Corey Bojorquez couldn't handle a snap to set up the Ravens for a short touchdown drive.

And don't just blame the players.  You have to include the coaches in the indictment too because this team just did not look ready mentally or strategically.

So lots of questions need to be answered this week before next week's game against the Los Angeles Chargers.  Maybe the biggest question will be the choice at quarterback.  Don't forget that Peterman was intercepted five times by the Chargers in the first half of last year's game.  I'd give the keys to Josh Allen.
