Florida Couple Visiting Buffalo Insults One Of Our Favorite Things
There are so many things that started in Buffalo that we take pride in, but others never seem to fully appreciate them.
We’re the home of the Buffalo Bills, yes…but we also invented the grain elevator, the first hydroelectric power plant, the windshield wiper, the air conditioner, and more.
So yeah, it would be fair to say we take pride in this place and what we’ve created.
That is not limited to sponge candy.
While sitting at a candy and ice cream shop in Kenmore this week, a couple came into the shop to grab some chocolate covered oreos and fudge.
But then they saw something that was unheard of: sponge candy.
At first, when I overheard them ask what sponge candy is, I thought they were kidding – because they were decked out head to toe in Buffalo Bills gear.
However, they were not.
The girl working behind the candy counter was scrambling to come up with an answer to explain what it tastes like.
“It’s porous, you know? But not like…chewy. More like…airy?” she told the couple.
Finally, she gave up, and the girl snuck the couple a piece of sponge candy for them to try.
Aaanndd, they were disgusted, to say the least.
The couple’s face clenched up before the woman said, “So what? Is this styrofoam dipped in chocolate and handed out as some kind of dessert?”
Well, yes. Pretty much nailed it there.
It reminded me of the time a friend visited from out of town, and I was excited to take her to try sponge candy for the first time, and she was too … until she tried it.
You can see her reaction below.
Well, people who aren’t from Buffalo may not like it, but that’s fine. It just means more for us!
