It's been an interesting offseason for the Buffalo Sabres. They are a team desperate to end an NHL record 14-year playoff drought. To do that, they have made several offseason moves. Some are good, some questionable.

The Good

They have focused on improving their defense, which was shakey last season. They traded for defensemen Michael Kesselring and Conor Timmins while removing Conor Clifton from their roster. Both will be immediate uopgrades, wutgh Kesserlig in particul expect to paly top 4 minutes. They also re-signed Bo Byram to a 2-year deal. The Sabres' blueline looks legit tough.

They also added a goaltender in Alex Lyon through free agency, and forward Josh Doan. Lyon has potential and has shown flashes of excellent play over his career. Doan is ready to make an NHL roster and be a nightly, high-motor contributor.

The Bad

They gave up JJ Peterak to get Kesserling and Doan. It's possibly a very good trade, but the issue is that they did not replace Peterka and his scoring ability. Instead, they seem to be banking on players Jack Quinn and Zach Benson having career years. That's possible, but many Sabres fans would have liked to see the team add a legit top 6 forward somehow. The assumption was that they would trade Bo Byram for that forward, but it never came to be, and they instead signed him to a 2-year deal. He could still be traded, but as of now, it seems like the Sabres are done adding to their roster.

As a result, they also did not address one of this team's biggest weaknesses: the Powerplay. They ranked 24th last year but spent much of the season near or at the bottom.

Another issue is in net. While they signed a goalie (Lyon), they are really banking on Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen bouncing back from one of his worst pro seasons, or Devon Levi rising to the NHL ranks and taking the reins. Both things are very possible, but when you're in 14-year playoff drought, the benefit of the doubt is rarely given. Levi struggled when given the opportunity to play fotr the Sabres last year, but had agreat season in the AHL wiht Rochester. UPL has the ability, and has done it before, but needs a strong camp and start to the season if he is going to be playing goal for the Sabres. Many would have liked to see them add a bona fide starter as the ultimate insurance policy. Lyon might be that, but he hasn't been a consistent starter in the NHL.

6 Buffalo Sabres That Need Breakout Seasons To End Playoff Drought

Assuming no trades, the Sabres will be relying on their own to continue to take steps forward and have a breakout season in order to end the playoff drought. Who, though, needs to have a breakout year? There are 6 players, I feel, who could (possibly) propel the Sabres into the playoffs by having career years. This is also assuming no major injuries or drop-offs from other players.
