Buffalo Zoo Must Make Good On Buffalo Bills Bet
Luna is one of the Buffalo Zoo's biggest attractions in Western New York....and after the Detroit Zoo announced last week that their polar bear had TWINS, everyone has been wondering when Luna's time will come. The female polar bear at the zoo has been with the intention that she will eventually mate within the Zoo's Species Survival Plan. No such luck....yet.
In the meantime, the Buffalo and Kansas City polar bears and their zoos had a bet going on for the football game last weekend. The Bills were going to visit the Chiefs in Kansas City and the losing team had to make a donation to Polar Bears International.
The Buffalo Zoo had to pay up and in addition, they had to provide the Kansas City Polar Bears with some treats.
All of us at the Kansas City Zoo are big Chiefs fans, even our polar bears Nuniq and Berlin. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate making it to the AFC championship than supporting both our hometown team and polar bear conservation at the same time. It’s a win for everyone!” said Randy Wisthoff, Executive Director/CEO of the Kansas City Zoo.
Our team, like the rest of the community, here in Buffalo has Bills fever, and we can’t wait for this weekend's matchup,” said Buffalo Zoo President and CEO Norah Fletchall. “I know our colleagues in Kansas City feel the same way for their team. No matter the outcome, this friendly wager is a win for polar bears and another outstanding conservation organization", according to the press conference that went out in January.
According to Bear Conservation, there are only about 300 captive polar bears in the world.
