Buffalo Sabres fans got a glimpse of what rookie Konsta Helenius could do on the ice during their playoff run this season, and over the weekend, they saw what a bright future he has on the ice.

Konsta Helenius Scores Gold Medal Winning Goal

Helenius, who plays for Team Finland, scored the "Golden Goal" in the IIHF men's world hockey championship as Finland beat Switzerland 1-0 in overtime.


That goal gave Finland its first gold medal since 2022 and its third in the last seven years. Helenius had three goals and three assists for a total of six points in six games.

He played well for the Sabres during their playoff run, scoring two goals in four games and adding a spark to the team in their series against Montreal.

Helenius is expected to be part of the Buffalo Sabres next season, after playing in Rochester for the last two years. During his time in Rochester, he scored 35 goals and had 63 assists for a total of 98 points.

Helenius was the 14th overall pick by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2024 NHL draft.

Buffalo Sabres 2026 Free Agents

The Sabres front office is currently working on the roster for the upcoming season, and here could be some major changes to the roster.

Alex Tuch remains an unrestricted free agent, and talks with the Sabres have been slow. He has been linked to several other teams besides the Sabres.

Several other players, including Zach Benson and Peyton Krebs, are restricted free agents and are expected to resign with Buffalo.
