What started out as a normal routine day for a Rochester EMT, took a wrong turn to the left after a run-in with a Rochester Police officer went wrong.

That officer is now in hot water with officials in Rochester after the incident.

According to reporting done by News 10 WHEC-TV in Rochester, a still unidentified investigator with the Rochester Police Department has his vehicle parked in the ambulance bay at Rochester's Strong Memorial Hospital when an ambulance pulled in with an emergency patient who needed medical attention.

When one of the EMTs got out of the ambulance, the door to the ambulance hit the Investigator's car. That's when things took a turn for the worse.

Instead of letting the EMT attend to the patient, it's alleged that the Investigator insisted on getting the EMTs identification. After the EMT refused and continue to tend to the patient, the investigator then entered the hospital and proceeded to slam the EMT against a counter inside the hospital. The EMT was then pushed against a wall, handcuffed, and taken away.

It appears that the EMT was not officially arrested. She was released without any charges and since the incident, the officer has been placed on desk duty while the Rochester Police Department looks into this situation.

I have high expectations for all members of the Rochester Police Department. Obviously, this incident is deeply concerning to me. As a result of this interaction at Strong Hospital, I have directed our Professional Standards Section to initiate an internal investigation. The member involved has been re-assigned to administrative duties, pending the results of this investigation. As Chief, I demand the members of the Rochester Police Department perform their duties in a professional manner. And as such, we must hold ourselves to a high standard of accountability.
-David Smith, Chief of Police Rochester Police Department

The City of Rochester Police Accountability Board is also looking into this incident that occurred on Monday, July 11, 2022.

Overall, the number of unusual incidents includes things like assaults, deaths, accidents, sexual misconduct, and disruptive behavior.  According to the state,
"The number of unusual incidents has increased 132% from 5,980 in 2011 to 13,870 in 2020. These higher incident numbers were largely due to increases in assaults on incarcerated individuals (+81%), assaults on staff (+86%), contraband (+130%), disruptive behavior (+372%), and staff use of weapons (+1,035%)."
In 2020, 1,836 weapons used to cut or stab, including ice picks, razor blades, can lids and shanks were discovered in state prisons around New York.
