Why Paint Now Costs Another $1.95 in New York
It's not just crazy inflation that is causing the price of things to increase in New York State.
A new state mandate and program are going to cause the cost of paint to increase by at least $1.95 per can, and it could be more depending on other factors.

In a press release that was issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the new New York State Postconsumer Paint Collection Program (PPCP) is fully underway in New York and is designed to make it easier for households and businesses to dispose of unused, unwanted, and/or leftover paint and supplies throughout the state.
The PPCP was signed into law by former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo back in 2019 as part of some changes to New York's Environmental Conservation Law and fully took effect on May 1, 2022.
Paint products can harm the environment if not managed properly... New York State's Paint Stewardship Program will simplify the process for those looking to dispose of paint by providing a collection network of paint retailers, local government facilities, and reuse stores at more than 300 drop-off sites across the state.
-Basil Seggos, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
This new program will allow used and leftover latex and oil-based paints, along with other products like stains, sealers, varnishes, and shellacs, to be dropped off at various sites across the Empire State.
This program is being funded by a new $1.95 fee that will be added to the price of paints that are sold. Officials were adamant to say this fee is not a tax but essentially like a user fee that will only impact those who buy paint.
NYS DEC has selected the non-profit organization PaintCare to manage this program. A quick review of the PaintCare website shows there are at least 25 different sites in Western New York that will accept used paint products.
You can find out more information about this program here on the NYS DEC website or here on the PaintCare website.
