3 Devastating Takes About Buffalo Bills Coach Sean McDermott
The Buffalo Bills head coach is facing a lot of criticism for how he handled the Bills' final offensive possession against Houston.
Sean McDermott has had his share of haters over the years. It all began with the dreaded "13-seconds" game. It was the 2021 AFC Divisional Playoff game between Buffalo and Kansas City. After the Bills took the lead on a late touchdown, they elected to kick the ball deep on the kickoff rather than a squib kick. If they had squibbed it, Kansas City would have to run off some of the 13 seconds left on the clock. Instead, the Chiefs used the final 13 seconds of regulation to get into field goal range, tie the game, and then win it in overtime. Many said this was bad game management by McDermott. They also criticized his prevent defense in that moment, which allowed the Chiefs to get the yardage they needed. This game has followed McDermott ever since.

There have been several other moments that McDermott has botched, but the most recent one was against the Houston Texans. The Bills got the ball back with the game tied 20-20 at their own 3-yard line and 32 seconds to go in regulation. Instead of running the ball to force Houston to sue their timeouts, the Bills threw 3 straight incomplete passes, only using 16 seconds of clock. They punted from their own endzone, giving Houston great field position. They immediately got into field goal range and kicked the game-winner with no time remaining.

Cowherd doesn't pull punches.
The frustrating thing is how McDermott seems to always mismanage these types of situations. The baffling thing is how he doesn't seem to learn to make better choices, especially involving game clocks.
Still, there is no denying McDermott's winning percentage and playoff appearances. The question remains can he get the Bills to a Super Bowl? If he continues to manage games like this, probably not.
