When is it too cold to go to school?  I guess it depends on what part of the country you live.  In this area school administrators generally agree that wind chills in the 15 to 20 below zero range make it too cold for children to walk to school or to wait at school bus stops.  Compare that with schools in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota area where the wind chill must be in the 35 to 40 below zero range before school administrators will consider closing schools.

If schools aren't already closed this week in Western New York they could be with expected high temperatures hovering around zero toward the end of the week.  Factor in the wind and it's the recipe for school closings.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) has a policy for suspending athletic activities when it's too cold or too hot.  Using the weatherbug.com app, NYSPHSAA wind chill policy dictates that when the wind chill reaches 11 degrees below zero or lower, no outside activity, practice or contest should be held.  In the case of Alpine skiing the policy of the host ski center will be used.

There is also a policy for when it's too hot.  NYSPHSAA heat index policy dictates that when the heat index reaches 96 degrees or higher, no outside activity, practice or contest should be held.  Inside activity should only be held if air conditioned.

That policy of course is for sports.  It's a much different story when it comes to the safety of very young children just trying to make their way to school.
