Why Buffalo Bills Fans Should Boycott The Super Bowl
After the Bills lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, again, many fans are vowing to boycott the Super Bowl on February 9.
From social media posts to petitions, many fans are fed up with the NFL, the Chiefs constantly being in the big game, and perhaps more than anything else, the referees. It’s no secret that the Chiefs have been on the fortunate end of many calls this season. Some penalties that have gone in their favor have legitimately changed the course of a game. The Bills' loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game is a prime example of this.
First, there was the catch that wasn’t. Wide receiver Xavier Worthy of the Chiefs and Cole Bishop of the Bills both went up for a throw from Patrick Mahomes and came down with the ball. The referees gave the Chiefs the reception, but in the replay, the ball clearly hit the ground, which should have negated a catch or interception. The play went under review but still returned in the Chief’s favor. They scored a touchdown soon after. Here’s the play:
Then there was the first down that wasn’t. The Bills were driving to extend tier lead and had a 4th and very short. They ran the infamous tush push play with Josh Allen to try and get the first down. It was, in fairness, a close play. One official, who seemed to have the better angle, had the Bills getting a first down. Another official, who was at what seems to be not as good of an angle, does not give them it. Upon review, they were not given the first down, but several replays seem to show Allen getting it. This video shows him getting the first down.
Another odd moment was when the Chiefs did not have enough time to reach the 2-minute warning at the half. They were short one second, but they were allowed to run the clock down with a rule the broadcast explained, but no one has seemed to ever hear of.
There were several holding calls, offside calls, and more pointed out by fans and pundits as well. There was even a flag during the Bills' last offensive play where Dalton Kincaid almost caught a ball to keep the Bills alive but dropped it. Many speculate that the flag was meant to make sure that if Kincaid caught the ball, it would be negated. There’s no way to know that, it’s just what many believe, seeing there was a flag thrown but no penalty was assessed.
Even comedian Bill Burr questioned the refs and the NFL’s motives with Rich Eisen.
The number 1 conspiracy theory is that the NFL wants the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl again so that they can maximize Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship and enhance female viewing, which is something many feel has been a goal of the league for many years. Many believe the Chiefs will defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, and Kelce will propose to Swift on the field.
I have to admit: I buy into this a lot. It's probably my bitterness. It’s also my lack of trust in the NFL, society, and anything involving billions of dollars. These days it seems like nothing is genuine, and everything is geared to ripping you off. That’s a great reason to boycott the Super Bowl, but it’s actually not my main reason.
Why Buffalo Bills Fans Should Boycott The Super Bowl
Bills Mafia, boycott the Super Bowl because you don’t need this. Whatever you believe, including those who don’t think the game is rigged and the Bills just lost to a better team, don't watch the Super Bowl because it’s not worth the heartache.
Look, we don’t see this as just a game. Is that healthy? Probably not. It is how this community sees it, though. You have given the Bills EVERYTHING you have, probably more than any fan base, and by a lot. You've shown up every week. You’ve pounded your chest literally and figuratively. You defend everything Buffalo Bills online. You spend thousands of dollars on the team. You have seen every variation of heartbreak, and yes, you deserve SO MUCH BETTER. We’re the best fan base in sports. We’re the most giving fanbase in sports. We bring it all every week, 24/7, 52 weeks a year.
Take a break.
Take ONE day. Use Super Bowl Sunday to be with family and not with football. Or just do anything other than watch this game. No matter what, you’re going to be disappointed. Nothing against the Eagles, but we’ve seen this game. Good luck to them, but we don’t need to participate. We’ve done enough. We deserve a day off.
Take it.
Then, we’ll get ready for the draft.
Will you be watching? Do you think it’s all rigged? Let me know: Pat@WBUF.com
