Why This Year’s Stanley Cup Finals is Bad for the Buffalo Sabres

This year's Stanley Cup finals pairs up some unlikely teams, the New Jersey Devils and the Los Angeles Kings. While it's easy to find some reasons to root for each team, the match up should be troubling for fans of the Buffalo Sabres. Here's some reason's why.

IT COULD HAVE BEEN THE BUFFALO SABRES

Los Angeles got in as an 8 seed and New Jersey was the sixth. The Sabres were one of the best teams in the league in the second half of the season, but were unable to complete their comeback from the celler of the Eastern Conference. Had they made the top 8 with a healthy Christian Erhoff and Tyler Myers and Miller playing at the top of his game again, they had a chance to go all the way. When are they going to learn not to blow points?

IT'S BORING HOCKEY

Both teams play a defensive brand of hockey, especially the New Jersey Devils who made clutching and grabbing more popular than Bill Clinton. It's a copy cat league and you can expect more teams to embrace the defensive style unless the NHL reverts to the post lockout crackdown on it. The Sabres are still an undersized team, and we need a league that emphasizes skating so guys like Tyler Ennis can fly.

NEITHER GOALIE IS ELITE

Sure Martin Brodeur is a future hall of famer and has led the Devils to the Cup finals 4 times, winning 3. But this isn't the Marty Brodeur of 2003. he's 40 years old and finished with a worst save percentage than Ryan Miller in the regular season. Jonathon Quick is finally living up to the hype he recieved when he was drafted, but this was his breakthrough season. He's getting paid way less than Miller's 6 million a season and doesn't have the same body of work. It's hard to justify Miller's salary when lesser goalies are winning Stanley Cup's.

LOS ANGELES IS IN THE FINALS

We've waited over 40 years for our beloved Buffalo Sabres to hoist the cup. Now some team from a market that could give a crap about hockey could win hockey's top prize before us. Sure Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato and the cast of Chuck are suddenly interested, but it's horrible for the true fans. Only thing worse would have been Phoenix making the finals.

SIX DEGREES OF BUFFALO SABRES

The New Jersey Devilsare loaded with the Sabres castaways including Henrik Tallinder, Eric Boulton, Danius Zubrus and Steve Bernier. Not sure if I can live in a world were Steve Bernier has his name on the Stanley Cup. The Kings don't have any ex-Sabres, but Ted Nolan's son, Jordon Nolan plays for Los Angeles. Are we cursed or something?
