Despite a valiant comeback the Buffalo Sabres one-game winning streak came to an end with a 5-4 overtime loss against the expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights in the final game of the Sabres' four-game western road trip.  The Sabres scored the first goal of the game when a shot by Ryan O'Reilly bounced over the goaltender into the net, but Vegas scored four in a row to take a 4-1 lead.

The Sabres have been playing about as poorly as I've ever seen them play and it was especially evident in the second period against Vegas.  This team supposedly is built to win, but defensively they're making poor decisions and offensively 5 on 5 they're just throwing the puck around.

They got some chances on the power play in the third period and made them count.  O'Reilly scored his second of the game to make it 4-2 and Sam Reinhart deflected a Rasmus Ristolainen shot into the net to cut the lead to a goal.  Then with just 9 seconds left in regulation Evander Kane batted a puck into the net to tie the game and force overtime.

Jack Eichel lost his stick in the overtime period and when he went to retrieve it, it gave Vegas a great advantage and David Perron buried the puck to give Vegas its fifth win in six games this season.  Meanwhile the Sabres have lost six of seven, although they did pick up points in a pair of overtime losses.

This Sabres team is deeply flawed.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason for some of the plays they're making.  Are they confused with coach Phil Housley's system or is there something else going on?  They better get it figured out quick because even though it's early in the season they could put themselves in such a big hole they'll never dig themselves out.

The Sabres return home to host Vancouver on Friday night.
