Video Review Leads To Buffalo Sabres Overtime Loss
Over and over and over again. It's been a familiar story for the Buffalo Sabres this season. They've played well enough to win so many games this season only to make a key mistake or have a bad bounce go against them or some other misfortune happen.
Wednesday night in Brooklyn the Sabres had a 2-1 lead with time winding down when the horn sounded to alert the referees that what appeared to have been a tremendous save by goaltender Robin Lehner was actually a New York Islanders goal. NHL headquarters had reviewed the video and decided the puck had fully crossed the goal line to tie the game and sending it to overtime.
That's one thing the Sabres never want to see - a game go to overtime where they have now lost seven of eight. The Islanders needed just a shade over a minute to score the game winner for a 3-2 win.
Zemgus Girgensons had tied the game after the Islanders had opened the scoring in the second period. Then in the third Kyle Okposo gave the Sabres the lead when he scored on a quick shot from the goal crease only to have the video review spoil what had appeared to be a hard-earned victory.
Robin Lehner stopped 31 of 34 Islanders shots, but not good enough to win for a Sabres team that just can't connect on the chances they do generate.
The Sabres play the New Jersey Devils on Friday night.
