The Buffalo Sabres have lost five in a row and 12 of their last 13 games.  They've been playing so poorly of late it's a fair question to wonder if they'll win another game this season.  They have five games left and it wouldn't surprise me if they lost them all.  How about this?  Win a game on fan appreciation night.

The Sabres lost again Thursday night against the Detroit Red Wings, but the outcome was actually in doubt until the Red Wings won it in overtime 5-4.  There were some positive signs though.  The Sabres actually put in an effort.  Yeah, they made plenty of defensive mistakes, but we've come to expect it of this team.

The biggest thing was they twice came back from two-goal deficits to tie the game.  From down 2-0, Kyle Okposo and Marco Scandella scored to tie it up 2-2.  Then after the Wings scored twice in the third period for a 4-2 lead Casey Mittelstadt and Jack Eichel scored 41 seconds apart to tie it again and force overtime.

Victor Olofsson registed his first NHL point when his perfect pass set up Eichel's goal.  Then in overtime Olofsson had a partial breakaway but shot the puck over the net.  Even without having had a chance to practice together, Olofsson had some chemistry with Eichel and Jeff Skinner.

So now it's back to the road where they've lost 13 in a row.  Saturday night the Sabres travel to Long Island to face the Islanders.
